More Love for Crash Kings
May 11, 2010 Music Picks, Video Picks
I just can’t get over how much I enjoy these guys! This song is my daughter’s favorite song, and definitely one of mine. Whether you’ve seen them or not, check out this live performance from Crash Kings of the song Mountain Man:
What We’re Listening To This Week

Late again, but here goes:
Josh
Like Bells – Like BellsInstrumental indie rock with a violin. Of course I dig it! You can actually get this one free at their label’s site right now, but since that won’t last forever, I’m keeping the Amazon link too. It’s got a little bit of an Explosions in the Sky vibe, but maybe a little more earthy. Check it out.

Andy McKee – Art of MotionI saw this guy on YouTube playing “drifting” and was blown away at his innovation on the acoustic guitar, so I bought his album on a whim. He slaps the instrument for percussion, plays bass lines with his left hand and taps harmonies with his right, he’s nuts! The album is great driving or working music. While highly technical, the music is incredibly relaxing and the lack of lyrics means it’s not distracting enough to pull you away from what you’re doing, if you have to be doing something else while listening. If you buy this album, I recommend you buy it on e-music because if you buy the actual CD, it’s import only and you’re looking at $18 or more!

Michael Bublé – Crazy Love
I’m lovin’ me some Michael Bublé this week. He’s embraced the Sinatra/Martin/Rat Pack style of Jazz and thrown in a little of his own flare. And it doesn’t hurt that he’s got that smooth, clean voice to share! I really like his second album “It’s Time,” and the latest, “Crazy Love,” is starting to grow on me as a whole project and not just individual songs.
Dion
David Cook – David CookI’ve been listening to Declaration by David Cook. Don’t write this guy off just because he did the American Idol thing and won. This is a solid pop/rock outing. my faves are: Come Back To Me, Barb-ba-sol, I Did It For You and Heroes. This dude’s voice is killer and the guitar work is good as well.
What We’re Listening To ::: Late Is Better Than Never
Jan 20, 2010 Music Picks
So, this past weekend was a little crazy, and I’m just now getting around to posting our Monday musical muses today. Actually, this turns out to be a good thing as I’ve discovered two albums since Monday that I’m obsessed with.
Josh
The Rocketboys – 20,000 Ghosts
This album was the soundtrack to a really difficult and emotional weekend. For those who don’t know, my wife’s grandmother passed away Sunday. It’s a long story, but it was simultaneously a difficult and precious time.
Spoon – Transference
While this album didn’t officially come out until yesterday, it was streaming on NPR’s website, so I listened to it in the waiting room. If you don’t have it, GO GET IT!
Murder by Death – Red of Tooth and Claw
OK, I’m officially cheating with this one. I stumbled across these guys on Monday, bought the album, and I’ve probably listened to it straight-through about 20 times already. This is what Johnny Cash might sound like if he was just getting started and had a killer cellist in his band. Dark, moody, wild, and different than just about anything else I’ve heard. I’m in love with their sound!
Scott
The Rocketboys – South Plains EP
I’ve been on a rocketboys kick all week. Good ole’ “South Plains EP” and
“20000 Ghosts.”
Brandi Jo
Alison Krauss and Union Station – Lonely Runs Both Ways
I’ve been listening to Alison Krauss and Union Station’s “Lonely Runs Both Ways” album a bit this week. Love me some bluegrass sweetness!
Dion
Better Than Ezra – Closer
I’ve been listening to a lot of the Better Than Ezra catalog. Specifically the just re-released Closer album. The title track and Briefly are two of the best tracks that never became hits for them.
What We’re Listening To ::: Jan. 11, 2010

So we thought we’d let you all in on the music that keeps us going through the weekend every Monday. Here’s what we’ve been listening to lately:
Josh
Switchfoot – Hello Hurricane
This album has been playing in my car almost nonstop since it came out. You can regularly find me driving around town screaming (literally) along with Bullet Soul. And seriously, the unison vocal / fuzz guitar part in the bridge of Mess Of Me is filthy. I love the more subdued, lyrically driven tracks, but I can’t stop rocking the harder tracks.
Scott
Victor Wooten – Palmystery
Bought this CD on iTunes last week and can’t quit listening to it. Usually Victor’s music is pretty unlistenable by non-musicians as the technical aspects of it are much more appealing than how it sounds, however, I highly recommend this album to friends because it’s similar to a Flecktone’s album (Victor’s other band) with Victor showing how well he can sit in the pocket and groove with a band while still being incredibly innovative in his playing. This is definitely a jazz album, which I can’t ever seem to wrap my head around, but I love it, so the album is stretching me musically. It’s been on repeat at work non-stop since I got it.
Damien Rice – O
An oldie but a goodie. This album’s been on repeat in the car and at home for the past few days. Don’t really know why, I just love the simplicity of the music and the emotion in Damien’s voice. Songs like “The Blower’s Daughter” and “Cannonball” are the kind of songs I wish I could write when I sit down with my acoustic.

Eleisha Eagle – Neither Here Nor There
I have found myself intentionally seeking out songs from “Neither Here Nor There” by Eleisha Eagle this week. Her jazzy pop sound coupled with a strong voice and sassy lyrics have made songs like “Hooked (Addicted You Might Say)”, “Rocketboy” and “When I’m With You” some of my favorites and the album as a whole a frequent visitor to my ears. I stumbled across her purely by accident (went to Monks to hear another band play one night when she opened), but am certainly happy to have added her to my shuffle opportunities!
The Chronicles of Narnia
My other consistent album this week? Actually, it’s not an album at all. It’s a series of audiobooks: Focus on the Family’s Radio Theatre drama of The Chronicles of Narnia. I’ve never read the books and received the series of audiobooks as a gift for Christmas. I feel like a kid again while still being challenged by Lewis’s subtle “moral behind the stories” points!
