Black Hole LIVE

For your Music Monday enjoyment, here’s a clip of us playing our song Black Hole from the Let The Record Slow album recently at a talent show / fundraiser. The audio was a little too loud for the recording equipment, but it turned out OK. Enjoy!

If you like the song, you can buy it by clicking the Store tab on our site.

According to Urban Dictionary…

But mom, everybody on Facebook’s doing it…

Brandi

An all around awesome kind of girl. When girls are jealous of Brandis, they often express hostility because they are not up to par. The thing about Brandi is that she still keeps her cool and is pretty fun to be with.

Scott

a male friend who is extremely intelligent, funny, kind, and always there for you. They usually plan to do something to better the world like going in to the Marines or Army. Liked by a lot of people and usually very attractive

An authentic fellow who is very intelligent, athletic, and sexy; has a very charming personality and keeps a cool head all the time. A great social being and a good role model to look up to.

What We’re Listening To This Week

Late again, but here goes:

Josh

Like Bells – Like Bells

Instrumental indie rock with a violin. Of course I dig it! You can actually get this one free at their label’s site right now, but since that won’t last forever, I’m keeping the Amazon link too. It’s got a little bit of an Explosions in the Sky vibe, but maybe a little more earthy. Check it out.

Scott

Andy McKee – Art of Motion

I saw this guy on YouTube playing “drifting” and was blown away at his innovation on the acoustic guitar, so I bought his album on a whim. He slaps the instrument for percussion, plays bass lines with his left hand and taps harmonies with his right, he’s nuts! The album is great driving or working music. While highly technical, the music is incredibly relaxing and the lack of lyrics means it’s not distracting enough to pull you away from what you’re doing, if you have to be doing something else while listening. If you buy this album, I recommend you buy it on e-music because if you buy the actual CD, it’s import only and you’re looking at $18 or more!

Brandi Jo

Michael Bublé – Crazy Love

I’m lovin’ me some Michael Bublé this week. He’s embraced the Sinatra/Martin/Rat Pack style of Jazz and thrown in a little of his own flare. And it doesn’t hurt that he’s got that smooth, clean voice to share! I really like his second album “It’s Time,” and the latest, “Crazy Love,” is starting to grow on me as a whole project and not just individual songs.

Dion

David Cook – David Cook

I’ve been listening to Declaration by David Cook. Don’t write this guy off just because he did the American Idol thing and won. This is a solid pop/rock outing. my faves are: Come Back To Me, Barb-ba-sol, I Did It For You and Heroes. This dude’s voice is killer and the guitar work is good as well.

YouTube Tuesday: One Last LOST Post

OK guys, last LOST video for awhile, I promise. This one really won’t interest you crazies who don’t like lost, but for those of you who do, this video was put together by someone with WAY too much free time. They managed to dig through the last 5 seasons and dig up every clip having to do with the plane crash and put them together a la “24″ style editing to make a real-time video of the crash. I thought it was pretty cool, and I’m in charge of the videos, so I guess that means you get to think it’s cool too!

Here ya go!

YouTube Tuesday: Special LOST Announcement

Hey guys, Scott again. Today’s video is very special to me. For 3 years of my life, I had a serious problem. I was a LOST hater. I hated Lost fans, their conversations and, most of all, the show. Then something happened. I actually watched the show. And for the next solid month of Christmas vacation, I did nothing but watch every episode on abc.com.

While I can’t speak for Dion, I know Brandi and Josh are LOST fans as well. So as the 3 of us are anxiously awaiting Tues, Feb 2 (along with most of America, apparently, since President Obama had to re-schedule his State of the Union address to avoid conflict with the LOST premiere), I present you this video that will appeal to both LOST nuts and LOST haters alike.

How to Score a Ton of Free Music Without Requiring an Eyepatch

Disclaimer: The Penny Jar is an eMusic affiliate and receives a small commission every time somebody clicks a link like the one below and signs up for an account (at least until they discover this article and give us the boot). Download 25 FREE songs at eMusic.com!
As a songwriter / performer who hopes to someday make a living doing what I love, I struggle with sharing this. It is not my intention to bite the hand that feeds (even if this particular hand is feeding artists some of the lowest royalty rates in the industry). But as an optimistic realist who’s pretty sure the days of getting rich selling copies of recorded music are coming to a screeching halt, I don’t really care. What I do care about is music. And since I am simultaneously financially challenged and morally opposed to stealing another artist’s work, I’m always on the hunt for any legal means to acquire a large library of meaningful music without breaking the bank.

I first tried eMusic in late 2008. A couple months later feeding my family beat out feeding my iPod and I quit. And that led to the discovery of a fun little loophole game that has helped me to finally own some classics alongside some brilliant music from bands I had never heard before.

And yes, I realize that writing this may backfire. Come what may, here’s how it works:

  1. Sign up for a free trial with eMusic. You’ll get 25 or more free songs (depending on the promotion they happen to be running at the moment; currently 35).
  2. Cancel before your 7 days are up and owe nothing, or you can go ahead and pay for a month or two (as I did) and then cancel. Do NOT simply put your account on hold. Their propaganda will tell you that canceling will cause you to lose your saved-for-later list and the ability to re-download tracks you’ve purchased. As far as I can tell (and I’ve canceled several times now) that’s simply not true.
  3. Wait. This is the hard part.
  4. Renew your account. In a couple of months you’ll receive an e-mail begging you to come back to eMusic. In exchange for returning to the fold, you’ll get 75 free downloads. Follow the link and sign up. Yes, you’ll have to pay something, but you’ll get 75 free songs on top of whatever your plan includes. Tip: Most albums on eMusic that have more than 12 tracks still only cost you 12 download credits, so you can get even more bang for your buck by downloading full albums. I’m on the $15-ish plan that gets me 35 songs (there are cheaper options), so for $15 and some change I get 110 songs (or more) which comes out to somewhere in the neighborhood of 14¢ / song.
  5. Go back to step 2 and repeat ad infinitum.

You’d think they’d eventually stop sending the same offer, but they haven’t yet. I’ve probably re-upped 6 or 7 times now. Many of my favorite albums by artists like Switchfoot, Eels, Spoon, Johnny Cash, Sufjan Stephens, Dave Matthews Band, The Swell Season, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bon Iver, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Sigur Ros, etc. were acquired this way. And since they just added over 10,000 new albums affiliated with Warner Music Group, chances are pretty good that you’ll find something you already want.

So give it a shot. While you’re at it, pick up our album (and give it a good rating if you’re feeling extra-nice). Then report back here in a couple months and let us know how it works!

What We’re Listening To ::: Late Is Better Than Never

So, this past weekend was a little crazy, and I’m just now getting around to posting our Monday musical muses today. Actually, this turns out to be a good thing as I’ve discovered two albums since Monday that I’m obsessed with.

Josh

The Rocketboys – 20,000 Ghosts

This album was the soundtrack to a really difficult and emotional weekend. For those who don’t know, my wife’s grandmother passed away Sunday. It’s a long story, but it was simultaneously a difficult and precious time.

Spoon – Transference

While this album didn’t officially come out until yesterday, it was streaming on NPR’s website, so I listened to it in the waiting room. If you don’t have it, GO GET IT!

Murder by Death – Red of Tooth and Claw

OK, I’m officially cheating with this one. I stumbled across these guys on Monday, bought the album, and I’ve probably listened to it straight-through about 20 times already. This is what Johnny Cash might sound like if he was just getting started and had a killer cellist in his band. Dark, moody, wild, and different than just about anything else I’ve heard. I’m in love with their sound!

Scott

The Rocketboys – South Plains EP

I’ve been on a rocketboys kick all week. Good ole’ “South Plains EP” and
“20000 Ghosts.”

Brandi Jo

Alison Krauss and Union Station – Lonely Runs Both Ways

I’ve been listening to Alison Krauss and Union Station’s “Lonely Runs Both Ways” album a bit this week. Love me some bluegrass sweetness!

Dion

Better Than Ezra – Closer

I’ve been listening to a lot of the Better Than Ezra catalog. Specifically the just re-released Closer album. The title track and Briefly are two of the best tracks that never became hits for them.
